Nike Women’s Marathon runs through on Sunday; street closures

This Sunday, the 8th annual Nike Women’s Marathon (and 1/2 marathon) will be running through the neighborhood. Racers start in Union Square at 7am and finish on the Great Highway near Lincoln.

I’ve included the portion of the course map above that shows where the runners will come through the neighborhood (view the full course map).

I was unable to find a list of road closures and times, but it’s safe to assume that anywhere the race goes will be closed to car traffic. That includes part of Sea Cliff near the 25th Avenue entrance to the Presidio, El Camino Real up to the Legion of Honor, the far end of Clement past the Veteran’s Hospital, most of the Great Highway, and major thoroughfares in Golden Gate Park like JFK and MLK Jr. Drives.

The race finish closes at 1:30pm so expect closures to last from into the early afternoon.

And if you want to see the marathon from the runner’s perspective, check out the video below. Good luck to all the runners!

  1. Can you recommend a place to park for a spectator wanting to see someone cross the finish line. I havent been able to find anything regarding parking in the area.

  2. @Antionette – Based on some comments I saw on the marathon’s Facebook page (http://www.facebook.com/NWM26.2?sk=wall), it sounds like the Ocean Beach Safeway offers paid parking. But you have to get there early as it fills up.

Honestly your best bet would be to grab the 5 Fulton out to the Great Highway or ride a bike. You likely won’t be able to park anywhere along the Great Highway or in Golden Gate Park. There should be parking on Fulton, but will probably be full as runners tend to leave their cars out there the night before so they have a way home after the race.

  3. @Antoinette – No, the 5 doesn’t run all the way from Union Square. You can catch the 38 Geary from there but that will drop you about 1/2 – 3/4 mile from the finish. But if you’re up for a little walking, that’s the most direct route (Geary runs parallel to Fulton about 5 blocks north).

Another option is to walk from Union Square to Hyde & McAllister where you can catch the 5 Fulton and take it all the way to its terminus at the finish line on the Great Highway.

  4. Just a funny note. If you watch the video around the 2:00 minute mark. You can clearly see the car/truck shooting this video do an illegal pass of a silver VW by crossing over a double yellow. Ha! As I write this, I think about how people zoom/speed up/down Geary between 32nd and 40th. Perhaps bad drivers are a sensitive spot as the avenues are sometimes highways IMO.

Thanks for the great blog Sarah!
