Local mag finally includes the Richmond District in their neighborhood profiles

A few months ago, Bold Italic contributor Drew Hoolhorst did a writeup on San Francisco neighborhoods, offering tips to those considering a move to the city by the Bay.

At the time, he got spat on in the comments from readers who totally disagreed with him or felt betrayed because their neighborhoods were completely looked over. Like the Richmond District. [Editor’s note: Yes, we did leave a comment to that effect but it wasn’t mean – no spitting, we swear!]

The fact that the Richmond District was overlooked was kind of humorous, especially since the Bold Italic has sponsored the annual Clementime holiday shopping event for 2 years running…

But Hoolhorst, undaunted, decided to write a part 2 in his series, this time providing “a look at the best of the rest of “where you should move” if you are moving here, including a few huge omissions I made before.”

And this time, the Richmond District made the cut.

Hoolhurt’s characterizations of the Inner and Outer Richmond were a little biting for our taste (“Are you a hermit? Boom. Nailed it. Live here.” he writes in reference to the Outer Richmond…), but it was the fun designs by Juan Leguizamon that we found most entertaining.

We’ve included the designs for our two microhoods here, but be sure to check out the full article to read Hoolhort’s witty insights into SF living (“Russian Hill is like graduate school for the Marina”), and Leguizamon’s fun illustrations.

Thanks to reader Chris W. for the tip.

  1. What’s with “that Pacific Ocean thing”? And how far “out there” can we really be in a 7×7-mile city?

Our neighborhood is indeed under-appreciated, and I’m not a real estate speculator so that’s just fine by me. What a rare place to have beautiful coastal land that is markedly cheaper than further inland.

Can you imagine what it’d be like if our streets were always jammed with traffic like on a warm Sunday afternoon?

And I reject the hermit label, but I do like me some peace & quiet, ocean views and personal space. And I love the quick commutes to the north and south.

  2. Its kind of funny that the author writes as if Inner Richmond and Outer Richmond were so very far apart, when, in reality, those restaurants he writes about are just a few blocks away for us “Outlanders”. I personally don’t mind if we keep Outer Richmond our un-discovered, under-reported jewel of SF, that’s part of the charm of living here!

  3. Let’s keep the pleasantries of living in the Outer Richmond “our little secret”. I venture to say it’s probably the quietest neighborhood in SF with xlnt transit choices and surrounded on two sides by parks, one side by the Pacific 😉

  4. Hermit & proud!

((although a way to hang out without getting drunk sometimes would be great))

  5. Heh. I’ll be honest, I’m quite happy being out here in the sticks, where I can go to 2 pizza joints, four coffee shops, a theater, a great burrito shop, a decent-sized market, a few pho restaurants, and an excellent produce store, all within a few blocks of my apartment, and not have to worry about traffic, trash or hipsters. Plus we have three major parks (Presidio, Lincoln and GGP) and three awesome museums! I’ll take Outside Lands over the Mission any day. 😉
