Another good Samaritan rescues a baby raccoon from traffic in GGP

On Thursday, we had another good Samaritan step in to spare some city wildlife.

Reader Adriana wrote in about her drive through Golden Gate Park around 4pm that afternoon, which came to a halt on Chain of Lakes Drive near the Bercut Equitation Field. She saw a woman standing near her black sedan, milling about.

“I figured she had been rear ended but in short order we saw her trying to shoo/usher a baby raccoon out of and across the street. When that didn’t work she had to pick it up in her sweater and carry it into to bushes and shoo it into the underbrush and out of harm’s way.”

Let’s hope the baby raccoon was able to reunite with Mama again. UPDATE: It was! We got this follow up comment from another reader, Melissa:

Good news I was there to see the Women in the black sedan save that cute Baby raccon. She rescued the poor little thing 4 times before I came up upon them. I want her to know her last effort worked. She put the baby deeper into the bushes and had to leave. I parked around the corner and stayed with the baby as it cried for Momma. Within a few minutes of making noises to make sure baby would not go back into traffic here comes Momma, the baby took one look at her and off they went back into the park, safe and sound. So thank you good samaritan in the black sedan you saved that cute little baby it was a wonderful thing to see, it made my day.

Adriana said it was “a great sight to behold but the 20 or so cars behind me we probably wondering what the heck was going on!”

  3. I was there too, the woman who rescued the raccoon was very nice. The raccoon was almost under my car and she came and picked him up.

  4. Hmmm, wonder if the baby raccoon now thinks the sweater is a ‘parent’ ;^}
