Readers have been abuzz about some new businesses that will be opening their doors soon:

MIZUTANI SUSHI – 4406 California
Mizutani set up shop in the former home of Bistro Sushi Bar & Restaurant / Chin’s Sushi near the corner of California and 6th Avenue. They’ll be opening this Friday night at 5pm and offering a 15% discount for a limited time. Hours will be daily from 11:30am – 2:30pm and 5pm to 10pm.

THE RICHFIELD – 195 5th Avenue
This is the closet-like cafe that belonged to Ro Cafe for 2 years. A newcomer, The Richfield, will be taking over the space. We don’t know too much about the business other than what is showing up in their Instagram account. Based on that, they’re giving the tiny space a full makeover including new wood floors, a natural wood bar, and a lot of fresh paint. They’ll be offering coffee, espresso, tea, hot chocolate and orange juice. Their slogan is “Never surrender if you want to be a contender.” No word on when they’re opening, but “soon” according to their social media.

ORSON’S BELLY CAFE – 1737 Balboa Street
According to Eater SF, a new film-themed, neighorhood cafe will be opening on Balboa near 19th Avenue. “”I wanted to blend cinema and hospitality in a cafe environment,” says Salur, and he found the perfect space in the form of a dive bar that’s been vacant for a decade.”” The cafe will have 50 seats and feature Four Barrel coffee and pastries in the morning, and fresh-baked quiches and sandwiches on house-baked bread in the afternoon. For evening, they’re going for a wine-bar vibe, with cheese plates and other bar snacks to accompany local craft beers and NorCal wines. They’re working towards an August opening.

  1. Mutani’s has a sign on the door saying they will open this friday night – I’m hopeful that they’re keeping my favorite Chin’s roll, the Shrimp Tempura Chum Fun.

  2. Thanks @Susan – I had glimpsed a sign but didn’t get a chance to read it!

  3. And I think Ro is now on Geary near Collins/Masonic, but not sure.

  4. @Rachel – I looked for Ro online including Yelp but didn’t find anything. So unless they changed their name, not sure their new location has opened yet.

  5. Thanks for checking, Sarah. I thought I saw their sign in the window of the cafe that used to be there (name escapes me) but who knows.

  6. Gentrifiers got their wish – no more pesky Chinese restaurants! 😉

  7. Actually, for part of those ten years, the dive bar space was a dive plumber’s storeroom. They’d pull up in fancy cars and change places with their graffiti-covered vans, then reverse the process each evening. Hopefully the trash all over their van’s dashboards didn’t reflect the quality of their work.
