Nibs Bakery on Balboa closes, citing housing crisis as cause

nibs

Reader Jen H. sent us the sad news last week that Nibs Bakery at 3717 Balboa near 38th Avenue has closed its doors.

The sign on the front door of the bakery said “After more than ten years, we unfortunately have to close Nibs Bakery and leave San Francisco due to the current housing situation.”

The bakery, a favorite among neighbors in the outer Balboa area, was well known for its homemade scones and muffins.

“The best scones and muffins around! Even the coffee, which is just simple coffee, is delicious. This is a local spot so it has been wonderful to see the same faces each time we go,” wrote one Yelp reviewer.

The bakery closed last Saturday after hosting an open house to say their final goodbyes.

“We have enjoyed getting to know all of you, and have been honored to be a part of your morning routine and family gatherings,” the sign also said.

“I’m so sad because their scones were amazing. Another victim of this ridiculous housing market :(,” Jen told us.

Farewell, Nibs. You will be missed.

  1. Rumor has it that a different local family is going to take the Nibs space over and have their own bakery in there (working out lease/permits/etc. now). I work on that same block and heard that the Nibs owners’ landlord (at their home, not Nibs) raised their rent to a level they cannot afford. Sad to see long-time neighbors priced out.

  2. I’ve NEVER seen Nibs open in the 10 years I’ve lived here. It must be a mirage!! Always thought it was a front for something else. With the amazing Marla Bakery on the next block, I wouldn’t wager any money on opening a bakery! Maybe a pizza joint, as the NY pizza dive up the block is closing.

  3. Yes, their landlord raised the rent on their home from $2500 to $5000 so they decided to move to Placerville. I met the new owners of the commercial space on Saturday – Lisa & don’t remember her husband’s name. She already has a pie business & they plan to serve breakfast & lunch items. They are also going to open the backyard space. I really loved Nibbs – it will be missed. Lovely owners & amazing scones!

  4. I never noticed Nibs ever n do not understand how that was possible as I always check out bakeries.

  5. Well darn. I didn’t know that last week’s visit my farewell scone. Tom, his wife, their dog, and their scones were a great excuse for driving an extra mile the mornings I had to move the car from the school zone; I will miss them greatly. Obscure, funky, open only 7 to 10:15 AM (but open daily), it was, as stated, a great neighborhood spot for early risers. I learned a little bit about dogs, music, art, and neighbors, every time I went in. Good luck in your new home, and good luck to the new folks.

  6. Good Lord. I’m so sorry to hear this. Their butterscotch scones were the absolute best. You had to get there early, though; they opened at 6:30 in the morning and closed when they ran out of pastries.

  7. I’m surprised they stayed open as long as they did. When I tried their baked goods they reeked of cigarettes, so I never went back.

  8. I am also surprised that they stayed open for so many years as well, their working hours are unheard of 7-11am, give me a break, they are just plain lazy, as a business owner you have to be creative and work to make it.
And, the smoking in the back, dogs in the kitchen, I am glad to see them go.
Although, some of their baked goods were good and cheap nevertherless!

  9. This is sad. Their coffee and baked good are amazing! I hope they continue to create their tasty treats in Placerville. I will miss their applesauce muffin.
