Recent incidents from the Richmond Police District:

ARREST: THEFT FROM A VEHICLE / VIOLATION OF PROBATION
12/30/2015 11:30 AM
Transverse Drive & JFK Drive
Undercover officers saw the suspects break the window of a parked car then reach in and steal property from a duffle bag on the back seat. When they arrested the pair (a 20 year old and a 17 year old), they discovered that the 17 year old was on probation for robbery.
Captain’s Note: The suspects in this case looked into several cars before breaking into this one. We believe they chose it because they could see a duffel bag inside.

ARREST: BURGLARY OF A RESIDENCE / VANDALISM
01/01/2016 3:11 PM
Fulton & 47th Ave
An alert dog walker saw the suspect take off a shoe and use it to break the window of a garage door. The suspect reached through the broken window to open the door and enter the garage. Responding officers caught the suspect hobbling away while wearing one shoe.
Captain’s Note: This suspect started 2016 off on the wrong foot (as have I with that pun).

ASSAULT WITH PEPPER SPRAY
01/01/2016 6:34 PM
JFK Drive & Stow Lake
The victim was walking on JFK when the suspect approached her from behind and sprayed her with pepper spray. She screamed and the suspect ran away.
Suspect: Unknown race male, 5’8” 175 lbs, wearing a black mask and dressed all in black

MENTAL HEALTH CASE
Fulton & 18th Ave
01/01/2016 9:11 PM
A woman called 911 saying that she was suicidal, was going to swallow all of her pills and needed help. Officers took her to the hospital.
Captain’s Note: This same person was taken to the hospital under similar circumstances 28 times in 2015.

ARREST: BURGLARY / POSSESSION OF STOLEN PROPERTY / PROBATION VIOLATION / SUSPENDED LICENSE
California & 19th Ave
01/02/2016 3:04 AM
A resident was home and watching TV when he heard his garage door open. He saw a suspect carry a bike out of his garage and load it into a waiting truck which then drove off. The resident followed in his car and called 911. By staying on the phone with the SFPD dispatcher, the resident was able to guide officers to the truck which contained three suspects. They had not one, but two of the resident’s bikes in their truck. The getaway driver had a suspended driver’s license.
Captain’s Note: For those of you keeping score at home, guess what crime one of the suspects was already on probation for committing. If you guessed burglary, give yourself a point.

ARREST: ASSAULT WITH A DEADLY WEAPON / THREATS / VANDALISM
Fulton & 47th Ave
01/03/2016 9:38 AM
San Francisco Park Rangers were clearing out the debris from an illegal encampment in Golden Gate Park when a suspect nearby holding a machete told them that he was going to “gut” them. They told him to drop the machete but he raised it and walked toward them. One ranger pepper sprayed the suspect who then ran off, stopping to smash the headlight on the rangers’ truck on the way. He ran onto the beach and into the surf. A US Park Police officer talked the suspect out of the water and handcuffed him.
Captain’s Note: Our colleagues in the US Park Police patrol the Golden Gate National Recreation Area (including Ocean Beach). As in this case, they frequently help us out.

MENTAL HEALTH CASE
Geary & Park Presidio
01/04/2016 9:03 PM
Officers on patrol saw a man in crisis running in and out of traffic at this busy intersection. He was screaming while waving his arms erratically. He ran away when officers tried to move him to safety and they had to restrain him to prevent him from being struck by a car. Once detained, he told officers that he has a psychiatric diagnosis and sometimes loses control of himself. He did not seem to realize that he had been running around in traffic. Officers took him to the hospital for treatment.

MENTAL HEALTH CASE
Geary & Park Presidio
01/05/2016 4:23 PM
Officers responded to a 911 call of a person acting strangely. They found a man in crisis deliberately throwing himself in front of cars. Officers had to restrain him to prevent him from getting hit by a car. Officers took him to the hospital for treatment.
Captain’s Note: If these two cases seem similar it’s because they involve the same person. Despite being taken to the hospital after the first incident, he was discharged and back in the same place in the same life threatening situation less than 24 hours later. In addition, the officers who had close physical contact with the man while detaining him learned that he had an infectious condition. (Is this a bad place to mention that we’re recruiting new police officers?)

ARREST: DRIVING UNDER THE INFLUENCE
Geary & 4th Ave
01/08/2015 1:54 AM
A concerned citizen told officers on patrol that he had just seen a white BMW speeding in the area. Officers did not have to look very hard since the BWM sped past their marked police car (oops), quickly pulled over, and parked illegally. The driver got out and started walking away. The officers stopped him and discovered that he was under the influence of alcohol (his blood alcohol content was over twice the legal limit). His driver’s license was suspended and he was on probation for… I’ll pause to let those of you playing our home game record your guesses… If you guessed DUI, give yourself another point.
