Introducing your candidates (so far) for District 1 Supervisor

We’ve started to hear rumblings from candidates that are running for the soon to be vacant District 1 (Richmond District) Board of Supervisors seat. The race will conclude with the election on November 8, 2016 (please Register to Vote!).

The field may get bigger as the filing deadline isn’t until June 14, 2016 (candidates have to pay $500 and get 20 signatures to officially enter the race), but here’s who has signed up to battle so far, presented in alphabetical order.

We encourage you to click the links on these candidates names to check out their websites.

Sherman D'SilvaSherman D’Silva
We know D’Silva from his runs in the 2008 and 2012 District 1 Supervisor races. He’s a life long Richmond District resident and works as the Manager at Shermsonia Cleaners on Geary. His priorities if he gets elected are traffic lights-major corridors, cleaner streets, repairing sidewalks, repaving streets, graffiti abatement, and recycled water distribution. Interesting tidbit: D’Silva will not accept any donations and will not spend more than $1,000 on his campaign.

Sandra FewerSandra Lee Fewer (Democrat)
Fewer is a fourth generation Chinese American San Franciscan, and has lived in the Richmond District with her husband and children for over 50 years. She was elected to the School Board for the San Francisco Unified School District in 2010 and has served two terms. “As Supervisor, I would be a caretaker for the residents of the Richmond District. I know the Richmond inside and out and will work hard to preserve the wonderful neighborhood we live in.” Interesting tidbit: Fewer’s husband was a SFPD officer for 35 years.

Richie GreenbergRichie Greenberg (Democrat)
Greenberg is a business advisor and startup consultant that has lived in San Francisco for 15 years (he hails from New York originally). He has a passion for small businesses and wishes “to streamline the often archaic and confusing process of starting a business with City Hall.” His priorities if elected are public schools, renters, public transportation, safety, business, and homelessness. He is a strong supporter and active member of San Francisco’s Jewish community, especially in The Richmond. Fun fact: He is a fan of Italian motorcycles.

jungreis
Jason Jungreis
Jungreis is a civil attorney including 17 years as a judge in San Francisco Superior Court, and 15 years as Director of Planning Association for the Richmond. He sums up his agenda as “lean, clean, and green”, which includes more trees, more bike lanes, individual property tax base basis to support renewable energy, repealing the 2003 Prop K sales tax, location-tracking of non-office City employees, and many other items which are detailed on his website. Fun fact: He has a chicken coop (with 3 chickens) and he built his own electric motorcyle.

Brian J. LarkinBrian J. Larkin
Larkin received 995 votes in the 2008 District 1 Supervisor election (3.47%). Here’s what we were able to find out: He’s married with three daughters, has lived in the Richmond District since 1985. He’s also served on some transportation committees. He currently is Principal at Larkin & Associates, where he provides construction management and construction dispute resolution & claims analysis services. Interesting tidbit: For 12 years he commanded the Civil Air Patrol squadron in the San Francisco National Guard facility.

davidleeDavid Lee
David Lee is back for another run after losing the District race in 2012. Lee owns an insurance business in the Richmond District and also teaches at SF State. He is a former chair of the Richmond Police Community Advisory Board, and is executive director of the Chinese American Voters Education Committee which works to register Richmond District residents to vote. He has also served as a Rec & Park Commissioner. Lee’s key issues are affordable housing, transportation and pedestrian safety.

Jonathan LyensJonathan Lyens (Democrat)
Lyens is President of the Board of the Richmond District Neighborhood Center, President of the FDR Democratic Club, and has experience in city government with the Mayor’s Budget Office, Department of Human Resources and currently the Department of Public Health. Interesting tidbit: Lyens has been blind since childhood and features a guide dog on his campaign logo (he has two black Labrador guide dogs). We saw him cross the Jog in the Fog finish line in its first year too. 🙂

Marjan PhilhourMarjan Philhour (Democrat)
Marjan was born in the Richmond District and started her career in DC working for Congressman Tom Lantos and then moved back to California and worked in Governor Grey Davis’ administration. She currently runs her own consulting firm, Philhour & Associates, working with nonprofits and local, state, and federal candidates. Her key issues are housing affordability, transportation infrastructure, and local businesses. Interesting tidbit: If elected, she would be the first Filipino-American, and the first Iranian-American woman, to serve on the Board of Supervisors.

Andrew ThornleyAndrew Pierce Thornley
Thornley has lived in the Richmond District for 30 years and currently works in the Sustainable Streets Division of the SF Municipal Transportation Agency, managing streets and curbs and sustainable mobility. His priorities are housing that’s affordable and available, safe, healthy streets, excellent transit and transportation, and strong, reliable infrastructure. Interesting tidbit: He appears to be an avid cyclist (spoke cards are one of the first campaign collateral pieces he produced).

UPDATE 6/20/16: There are two other candidates registered for the election – Jason Jungreis and Samuel Kwong. We have been unable to find any information online about these candidates but will update as we learn more.

UPDATE #2 6/20/16: We located a website for Jason Jungreis so his profile has been added above.

  1. Personally, I think Sarah B. should be drafted to run. She has written the Richmond blog for 5 years, is a homeowner in the Richmond, is a business owner in the Richmond, and in the spirit of community, created the “Jog in the Fog” which has benefited both the Richmond Center and the WMCA.

  2. Linda, the same thought occurred to me when I was reading through this list of suitors! While I think she’s got her hands full for the time being, I think this topic should be revisited. BACON 2020!!!

  3. Thank you for posting this! As I mentioned on Facebook, in a ranked choice system even us as candidates need to find two other people to vote for =) Looking forward to this campaign.

  4. not a lot of diversity in candidates. they all have the same issues and the same political party.

how about theser topics which are important to many of us.
    1) increase in homeless population in D1
    2) decrease in parking in D1
    3) homeowner’s rights in D1
    4) cleaner streets in D1
    5) transportation, specifically a call for a Geary subway
    6) upzoning geary corridor
    7) making the planning process work better. home imprvoement projects shouldnt be stuck in planning for years
    8) making business owners clean sidewalks in front of their business
    9) outlawing constant spitting on streets and tossing of cigarette butts
    10) fining doublparkers all over clement
    11) arresting scofflaw cyclists on arguello

  5. Moto Mayhem – You’ve listed many good issues for discussion. I’m holding a community coffee gathering at The Richfield this Sunday 3/20 @1:30pm. All are welcome and I hope you can make it. If not, please stay tuned for future gatherings and feel free to email me at info@lyensforsf.com.

  6. I will consider any candidate what will sign a pledge, in their own blood, that they will not seek any higher political office within 4 years of their last day as Supervisor.

I am tired of the Board of Supervisors being nothing but training wheels for higher office.

  7. Too bad Sarah isn’t running. Her campaign slogan could’ve been, “Everything’s better with Bacon!” :^}

  8. Dear Candidates:
Eric Mar’s signature legislation was to stop McDonald’s “Happy Meals” program. Before him Jake McGoldrick major ballot effort was an initiative to “decriminalize” prostitution. While the city sidewalk on 14th Ave is in dangerous disrepair all of the current supervisors were able to find time to declare Mario Woods Day. My question for each of is whether you have the courage and independence to focus 100% on the real needs of the district and the City rather than to ideological grandstanding we’ve seen from past District 1 Supervisors?

  9. Dear candidates,
Can you please, please, please tell us what we can do about the ongoing and unresolved decay of our beloved Alexandria Theater! We need action and accountability here.

  10. Sherman is the only candidate that seems to care about local issues. He has my vote!!

  11. Sandra Lee Fewer’s (selected) endorsements include Eric Mar, Aaron Peskin, Jane Kim, David Campos, and Art Agnos. Just sayin’.

  12. Marjan Philhour’s (selected) endorsements include Scott Wiener, Betty Yee, Carmen Chu, Katy Tang, Malia Cohen, and Mark Farrell.

  13. Calvin, Thanks for the endorsement info. I now know whose names will be plastered everywhere (and competing signs surreptitiously removed), whose robocalls I will be ignoring, and which two will receive the most votes due to the majority of voters picking names they have seen too many times.

Which of these candidates has the temerity to demand that any re-zoning of real estate be buttressed with matching infrastructure to include roads, parks, sewage, underground utilities, Muni capacity and retail and services to meet the additional residential needs. Not everyone wants to go to Mission Bay for basic medical needs, downtown to buy shoes or to the Sunset for decent human butchers.

What do they all have to say about the failed Safeway/Albertson’s/Fresh&Easy on Clement, the Alexandria dereliction, abundance of massage parlors, potholed Geary, abandoned medians and street trees, increased petty and not so petty crime that our past two DAs refuse to prosecute?

District elections do a disservice to the city as a whole and ought to be replaced by fewer districts with a similar number of at large Supes because I know we will never go back to all at large.

  14. Thrilled that so many people are engaging in the comments. It’s a small enough district that you’ll all have a chance to meet all of us if you want and talk through these issues. I see Jonathan posted his office hours – I have some coming up on the morning of Monday, March 28 at 8 am at Arguello Super Market – and hold them pretty regularly. Email info@votemarjan.com for updates, or follow the calendar at my website votemarjan.com. I think now is exactly the time to just get to know all the candidates and to communicate your issues and needs to them. There are a lot of great questions and points above. Thank you all!

  15. I dont know sandra, but based on those endorsements, i would never vote for her. Campos and jane kim are the absolute worst nitwits, and have their heart set on destroying the city. and eric mar didnt do one single thing for the richmond

“Sandra Lee Fewer’s (selected) endorsements include Eric Mar, Aaron Peskin, Jane Kim, David Campos, and Art Agnos. “

  16. I just want someone who will keep the streets clean, paved, parks clean, lights on, and homeless out of sight. I am tired of all this ideological posturing, bicycle-rights-ers, affordable housing activists, racial politickers, and all the shady ‘connected movers and shakers. Enough.

  17. I will not vote for anyone endorsed by Eric Mar, David Campos or Art Agnos. If you want our homeless budget to go from $280M a year to $500M a year, vote for their endorsees. From the looks of this, I like Sherman D’Silva or Larkin. I might like Larkin, Thornley or Philhour, depending on how they come across.

  18. Mar is a good guy, but in a lot of ways has been a failure. Too concerned with symbolic gestures and yet there is garbage all over the place and you can’t drive down Geary street, essentially.

  19. Is there any chance there might be a forum in the future so we can see and meet candidates all in one place? Not saying to organize a debate, but we would love to have the opportunity to hear all the candidate’s platforms and possibly ask questions/get to know them better. Neutral territory, of course.

We too are bummed that there will not be Sarah Bacon ’16 bumper stickers to buy, but we’re hoping for the future. 🙂

  20. everybody will be disappointed if there’s excessive reliance on supervisors, or any politician from d1 to d.c. for example, how can philhour, fewer, greenberg, et al prevent people from going broke & becoming homeless. trump might export people to other countries, but it’s a reaction, not a solution. folks got to figure out their own lives, instead or leaning on a supervisor whose only interest is revenue.

  21. just found your blog
you can add david lee to the list…yes he is back
and par for the course, he had his students out collecting signatures and campaigning…for extra credit
hopefully the chron will endorse him again and kill his campaign

  22. Don’t vote Fewer 1, 2 or 3. She caused 8th grade algebra to be eliminated which means children in private and suburban schools can start high school a year ahead in math due to political correctness. She’s been on the board a long time and the achievement gap hasn’t moved. She hurt public school students.

  23. I’m leaning Jungreis or Larkin. Jungreis seems to be the only one willing to stick his neck out and go into specifics about his stance on a ton of issues. I don’t agree with all of them but enough for me to consider him. Larkin because he seems pragmatic and savy. He knows D1 may be a swing vote on the board and is willing to use it as leverage to make sure D1 isn’t ignored.

But please do not vote for Fewer; unless you want SF to be a giant sanctuary toilet bowl where free speech is no longer allowed.

  24. There is s candidates forum on Sunday afternoon October 2nd sponsored by Faith in Action Bay area and hosted at St James Episcopal church California @8th …..from 2-4 PM………Each candidate in random order will make a 2 min opening statement then again in random order answer questions and after everyone has answered questions then again in random order ….a l min closing
