Green Apple Books staff member perished in Ghost Ship fire

Johnny Igaz, a Green Apple Books staff members, was a victim in the December 2 Oakland Ghost Ship fire.

We received a sad email from Green Apple Books this afternoon:

Dear members of the Green Apple community,

We would usually be coming at you with holiday picks, cool gift ideas, fine books for young readers, and we WILL send you that on Thursday. But first, it’s our burden to share some awful news, because YOU are part of our community, too.

Green Apple is crushed by the loss of our music buyer, Johnny Igaz, in the Oakland Ghost Ship fire.

While Johnny had only been with us at Green Apple for a few months, one thing that we all know for certain is how we fell head over heels for Johnny in such a short time. His charisma and passions were instantly engaging, and he had a welcoming composure that made everyone feel like a friend. He told us (and his brother Paul confirmed it) that this was his dream job.

We’re doing our best to keep the shelves onhealthy buy doxycycline stocked and customers pleased, as Green Apple must carry on to support this family, but we do so with heavy hearts. The staff here has shown incredible grit, and we are doing our best to support each other and grieve in shifts, in our own ways, at our own paces.

Many have offered support or help–we understand the desire to do SOMETHING, and we are grateful for the love and sympathy. We’ll soon have a place at the store for remembrances, but in the meanwhile, we hope you’ll support Green Apple without talking directly to staff about this loss; it’s just too raw still.

We send our love to Johnny’s family, his many friends, and to the hundreds of mourning souls in the Bay Area touched by the many lives lost in this tragedy. Thank you for being part of Green Apple’s extended family. We’re only here with your support.

Peace.
Pete, Kevin, Kevin, and the entire staff of both stores

Johnny had a passion for music, and Green Apple shared a link to his Soundcloud page. We’ve embedded one of his compositions, “Scheherazade (City Mix)” below.

Our sincerest condolences to the family at Green Apple Books on their loss,

Sarah B.

  1. I saw a news van parked across the street from Green Apple just a few hours ago. I had no idea they were doing a story about Johnny Igaz. Even though I never met him I feel a loss since from what I’d read he was part of our neighborhood.

  2. This is all so terrible.
If Green Apple establishes any kind of memorial fund, etc., I hope they will let us know.
This tragedy just keeps getting bigger…

  3. Oh Kevin!
I am just heartbroken for you and the entire Green Apple family. This is just terrible and I am so, so sorry.
