Safeway proposes an Andronico’s Community Market for the 32nd & Clement location; public meeting August 22

The former Fresh N Easy space at 375 32nd Avenue for which Safeway is proposing a new Andronico’s Community Market

Back in October of last year, we told you that Safeway had signed a lease on the 375 32nd Avenue space, former home of Fresh & Easy Neighborhood Market. Not much has happened since then but in yesterday’s newsletter from Supervisor Sandra Fewer, a new nugget of information was revealed.

Safeway is proposing the space be used for an Andronico’s Community Market, a variation on their stores that stems from their acquisition of Andronico’s Community Markets. In 2016, Safeway purchased the Andronico’s family of five stores across Berkeley, San Francisco, San Anselmo and Los Altos. Since the acquisition, all but the San Francisco location of Andronico’s has been rebranded into a Safeway Community Market.

According to the Andronico’s Community Market website, this is their story:

Andronico’s is the eclectic, upbeat neighborhood hub for feeding a healthy lifestyle. It’s all here: the freshest local everything, natural groceries, specialties, and inspired “made-from-scratch” meals and treats along with the everyday products that everybody likes. Our friendly, down-to-earth team of experts is happy to help you find what you want, or discover something new. We make good eating fun and easy.

Safeway already has two regular markets in the Richmond District on 7th Avenue and Cabrillo, and on La Playa near Fulton out by Ocean Beach. So a different, smaller community market probably makes good sense for this third location.

“We would like to begin construction as soon as possible and we anticipate the store opening to take place in 2019. The new store will offer expanded local, fresh and organic offerings. In addition, customers will find an assortment of natural, specialty and healthier for you items,” said Safeway spokesperson Wendy Gutshall.

On Wednesday, August 22 at 6pm in the 375 32nd Avenue space, Safeway will hold their public pre-application meeting to hear feedback from neighbors on the proposal for the new Andronico’s market. For more information on the meeting or project, email Natalie.Mattei@safeway.com.

  1. the andronico-safeway on Irving is mostly the same as it was before – but it offers anyone Safeway club prices and you don’t need a club card or anything – you just buy the stuff at a discount. It offers things a regular safeway does not ( and vice versa). Considering that this was always going to be a big store of some sort, this is actually a good deal and people shouldn’t SF Entitlement Syndrome and whine about it

  2. This would be awesome! Would be great if they added EV charging too. Lots of parking space on the roof lot.

  3. This is great news! My #1 issue is that the surrounding area is kept clean and free of homeless encampments.

  4. Where did I read that Safeway really has no intention to put a store in that space and don’t mind keeping it vacant to keep any competitors from moving in there?

  5. If they have a good bulk bin section, I will shop there. Good bicycle parking would be great too.

  6. This is what should have happened when the Safeway that was at the site closed

  7. Great news, only thing better would have been a Trader Joe’s, but no complaints here!

  8. Happy to see that huge vacancy get put to a great use for the neighborhood!

  9. “it offers anyone Safeway club prices and you don’t need a club card or anything”

When the ACM on Irving opened, I know it didn’t record your purchases for Gas (now Gas/Grocery) Rewards or had Just4U. I’m not sure if this is still the case. If the new ACM doesn’t offer this benefit, I’ll continue to shop (mostly) at La Playa.

  10. Will they get rid of the CVS? If not…it’s a small space?

  11. I want a whole foods!! But I’ll take this… I just hope it doesn’t attract the usual feral zombies. My neighborhood is peaceful wanna keep the poop and needles out!

  12. I was hoping for a trader joe’s
    oh well
at least it won’t be empty anymore

  13. *Bump

Does anyone have any details on the result of the community meeting?
Like @daniel asked “How did the community meeting go?”

Unfortunately I was unable to attend, but am very interested!

  14. I sent a request to Natalie Mattei of Safeway (email above) for information about the meeting since I was not able to attend. Never received a response.

  15. Natalie Mattei of Safeway I have a question for you. I am in the Mt View/ Los Altos area and shop at Safeway Community. So after you bought out Andronic’s you changed the name, did the remodels etc, and are doing much better business than when it was Andronico’s. What is this I hear you want to revert it back to the Andronico’s name?? Say what?! That does not even make sense from a marketing standpoint. If that is true? If so, what a waste of money!
