New film about Pearl Jam’s 20 years in the biz opens at the Balboa, Sept. 20

The Balboa Theater will be screening “Pearl Jam Twenty”, a new rockumentary from acclaimed director Cameron Crowe. The film chronicles the band’s history and wild ride with the music business and fame.

Pearl Jam Twenty chronicles the years leading up to the band’s formation, the chaos that ensued soon-after their rise to megastardom, their step back from center stage, and the creation of a trusted circle that would surround them—giving way to a work culture that would sustain them. Told in big themes and bold colors with blistering sound, the film is carved from over 1,200 hours of rarely-seen and never-before seen footage spanning the band’s career. Pearl Jam Twenty is the definitive portrait of Pearl Jam: part concert film, part intimate insider-hang, part testimonial to the power of music and uncompromising artists.

The Balboa will premiere the film on September 20 with 2 shows at 7pm (already sold out) and 9:30pm. You can purchase tickets online in advance ($10).

After the initial premiere, Pearl Jam Twenty will play once a day from September 23 through September 29 (check the Balboa Theater website for showtimes).

  1. so is the Balboa Theater closing or what? in the press this summer, Gary Meyers said he wanted to sell it by August. did he sell it and it is operating under new ownership? or he is just still running it while he is unsuccessfully trying to sell it?

  2. @cf – No news yet on what the fate of the theater will be. Gary actually leases the theater from other owners, but yes, he is trying to find someone to take over the business. The last update from the Balboa newsletter was that he is staying on through September.
