Despite the growth of digital books and the internet being the go-to place for information, there is still something satisfying (and warm and fuzzy) about having a library card. Just knowing you can access a building full of books and knowledge is empowering.
The city is hosting a fun contest to find the next round of designs for the San Francisco Public Library Card. From now through October 5, children, teens and adults can submit their original artwork for a chance to have it turned into one of five card designs.
Artwork is accepted in five categories, divided by grade or age: 2nd Grade and under; 3rd-5th Grades; Middle School; High School; and Adult.
You can find out more about the contest and submit your entries on improvesf.com. You can download the card template here (PDF) to get started.
Submitted designs can also be viewed online and voted for by the public. I think this one by Jillian K is pretty good!
The entry deadline is October 5 so get to work! And if you submit one, leave a comment with a link to let us know. We’d love to see it.

P.S. – Don’t have a library card? Check out this webpage to find out how to get one.
we saw how well that worked for the SFMTA – they got a plagiarized logo.
Just submitted one! Thanks for the diversion, I needed a break today… 🙂 http://www.improvesf.com/adults-design-the-new-san-francisco-public-library-cards/golden-gate-sunset
Nice job, Robin! You got my like.

njudah: I just looked up the SFMTA logo fiasco. I wouldn’t call it plagiarism, more like a similar geometric abstract that others have used before, and will continue to do so. AKTA and the owner have been calm and collected, and do not believe the design was intentionally stolen. The designer of the SFMTA logo is with a very well known and respected design firm (Method) and I doubt he would jeopardize the whole business over a free contest entry.

Robin, I’d definitely trade in my library card for one with your design on it.
Hi Ruth,
Books are great! I’m glad you like to read too. I like your colorful drawing.
Thanks Renee! 🙂 It would be fun to have a colorful library card – no matter who wins I’m looking forward to trading mine out. All the designs so far are cool…
