Police Blotter – September 25, 2015

SFPD Richmond District Police Station
Weekly Update 09-25-2015
From Captain Simon Silverman

The SFPD will be taking drugs with the DEA this weekend:
This Saturday September 26 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. the SFPD and the Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) will accept drop off of expired, unused, and unwanted prescription drugs. Bring your medications to any SFPD Station for free and anonymous disposal. No questions asked.

Here are some of the incidents that occurred in the Richmond Police District this week:

ARREST: DRIVING UNDER THE INFLUENCE OF ALCOHOL & DRUGS
09/19/2015 4:35 AM
Geary & Spruce
Officers on patrol saw a driver having difficulty staying within his lane who nearly crashed into another car. They pulled him over and discovered that he was under the influence of alcohol and stimulants. A search of the car revealed a baggie of cocaine.
Captain’s Note: Because people often mix their intoxicants, officers receive special training in detecting drivers who are under the combined influence of alcohol and drugs. No matter the mixture, driving under the influence is a recipe for trouble.

MENTAL HEALTH CALL
09/19/2015 9:10 AM
Fulton & 42nd Ave
A man called 911 to say that his girlfriend was having a psychotic episode and trying to harm herself by punching herself in the face. When officers arrived, the woman was agitated and behaving violently. They called for paramedics who took her to the hospital.

ARREST: WARRANTS
09/19/2015 7:06 PM
JFK & Bernice Rogers Way (in Golden Gate Park)
Officers responded to a report of a person carrying a shovel and behaving suspiciously. The suspect had warrants for his arrest for battery and for assault with a deadly weapon.
Captain’s Note: We think the shovel may have been stolen from Rec and Park but we could not dig up the owner.

ARREST: WARRANT
09/19/2015 7:15 PM
California & Presidio
Officers responded to a call of a person causing a disturbance on a MUNI bus. They detained the suspect who gave them what they suspected was a fake name. The officers noticed that the suspect was wearing a hospital wristband with a different name than the one he had just given them. The suspect told them that the wristband belonged to a friend, but the officers entered the name from the wristband into our mug shot database and up popped a picture of… guess who? The suspect had a warrant for false imprisonment.

TRAFFIC COLLISION WITH MAJOR INJURIES
09/19/2015 8:22 PM
MLK & Crossover
A Mercedes was turning from eastbound MLK to northbound Crossover when the driver failed to yield to a bicyclist who was riding west on MLK. This resulted in major injuries to the cyclist. The driver was cited.

BURGLARY OF AN OCCUPIED RESIDENCE
09/20/1025 4:00 PM
Fulton & 34th Ave
The residents were at home in their apartment when the suspect suddenly appeared inside and asked, “Where’s the party?” One resident escorted the suspect out, not discovering until later that he had stolen several items from elsewhere in the home.
Suspect: Black male, 30-40 years old, skinny build, dark complexion, rotten teeth, bad odor, and disheveled appearance.

ARREST: SHOPLIFTING
09/20/2015 4:13 PM
Geary & Masonic
Two teens were arrested for stealing champagne from a store.
Captain’s Note: This is another example of how upscale San Francisco has become. When I was a rookie police officer 28 years ago teens used to steal beer.

Sutro Heights & 48th Ave
The driver and sole occupant of a vehicle drove off the road and down a wooded hillside resulting in major injuries. The cause of the collision remains under investigation.

09/22/2015 9:30 AM

ROBBERY
09/24/2015 10:27 PM
Geary & 16th Ave
The suspect walked into the business and asked for change for the bus. When the employee opened the register, the suspect lifted his sweatshirt and showed what appeared to be the butt of gun in his waistband. The suspect told the employee to give him all of the money.

Officers on patrol saw a car make a sudden, unsafe lane change without signaling. They stopped the car and found that the driver was intoxicated. He told them, “I thought I could make it home. I was only going 15 blocks.”
Captain’s Note: The SFPD will conduct a DUI saturation patrol and DUI Checkpoint somewhere in the City on Friday, September 25th between the hours of 7:00 P.M. and 3:00 A.M. I won’t give away the location, but a word of caution to the suspect above: It could be within 15 blocks of your house.

  1. You weren’t able to dig up the shovel’s owner, eh? So does the SFPD think the evidence was planted?

  2. “The SFPD will be taking drugs with the DEA this weekend:”

    Hope they were good!

  3. Just going to say it – for a neighborhood with like statistically zero black people, they sure are causing a lot of crime.

  4. As always, laughing my arse off while reading about crimes in my hood. Captain Silverman needs to write a book!

  5. @ED,
You’re shocked to learn that the people out robbing stores and mugging people aren’t from the Richmond?

Assigning race to it is a fallacy, and a dangerous one. The link to crime is poverty, not skin tone, and sadly many black people in the city are impoverished.

  6. @Straver. Meh, the link to crime is the absence of a moral compass, IMO. Most impoverished people don’t commit crimes.

  7. @Ed, Ok. At least you’re willing to admit your prejudices and identify them so well.

I too stereotype people, deciding in advance how dangerous or smart they are. I just use their own comments to do it, so I appreciate when people make it obvious

  8. Still looking to find out why lanes were closed northbound in Park Presidio 9/25/15 approx at 8:30 pm- close to clement street..

  9. Stravis is right. There’s a lot of poor Hispanic people too. But there aren’t as many committing crimes in our neighborhood. Why is that?

  10. A – it was the friday evening DUI checkpoint – noted above in the DUI arrest!
