#bummer: Melisa’s Chinese Cuisine on Balboa closes down after 23 years

The interior of Melisa’s Chinese Cuisine on Balboa, which has closed after 23 years

Reader Derek sent us the news this past weekend that Melisa’s Chinese Cuisine at 450 Balboa has called it quits.

The owner, Richard, posted a note on the door saying “Dear customers, Melisa’s Chinese Cuisine is closed for good due to circumstances we cannot control. Thank you for your support for 23 years! (1995-2018) – Richard”.

Melisa’s was a neighborhood institution, particularly adored for its “mom & pop” feel, tasty food and delivery service. In 2012, the restaurant was forced to close for 6 months after a fire at a neighboring business caused water damage in the restaurant.

Notes from customers were posted in the window with kind words like “You have been my favorite restaurant ever!”, “Thank you for the many beautiful lunches and dinners at your fine restaurant…May fortune smile upon you”, and “Thank you – always worth the drive from the East Bay!”.

Derek also told us that the space won’t be empty for too long. A new business called “Foghorn” has applied to transfer Melisa’s beer and wine license. Foghorn is part of Nitty Gritty LLC, which also owns and operates Richmond Republic Draught House at 642 Clement St.

Were you a Melisa’s fan? Post your well wishes in the comments and tell us what you’ll miss the most!

  1. We will miss them! Best fried tofu & chow fun in the neighborhood, and free delivery! My husband and daughter used to go there (and Balboa Sushi, RIP) for lunch dates on Fridays after school.

Will probably be replaced by another pretentious place with crummy food, not a place you can bring your family for a decent meal at decent prices.

  2. Oh, I’m so sad!! I love Melissa’s. Great food. Affordable prices. Just down to earth and pleasant.

  3. Booo! I will always miss their spicy szechuan eggplant — the best! Many fond memories of walking over the hill on a foggy night to get it. Thank you, Melissa’s, for all the sustenance.

  4. Oh no, Melissa’s was my spot for years! Just went there not too long ago. BBQ pork fried rice and orange chicken was my usual. Richard was so nice.

  5. Dear Richard and Family,
Thank You for providing me with the best Chinese food in San Francisco for many years. Your hot and sour soup was so healing. I wish you the elimination of all problems and very, very good luck in 2019. If you ever open a restaurant again, I need to know. Much love, Deborah Carter
